Morning Cup is a new daily segment where I’ll post what I am drinking this morning with a quick image of my beverage and some initial thoughts. These posts are not thorough reviews, and haven’t been put through my standard review process.

A little late posting this morning.

I’m finally able to touch some whole leaf tea again! This morning I’ relaxing with some Citron Oolong from Davids Tea.

The cup is notably filled with the scent and flavor of oranges. The finish is smooth without astringency. Subsequent steepings seem to fade quickly.

What’s in your cup?

DAVIDsTEA has been growing pretty rapidly these past few years. They’re one of the largest brick and mortar retailers of tea in North America. They offer hundreds of teas across a wide variety of cultures and types.

The loose leaves for this Coffee Pu’erh are loose, not caked. They’re a dark grey/black and brew the typical dark maroon/bergundy brew with copper edges and hints of honey yellow.

The dry leaf aroma is light and clean with overtones of coffee with creamer or milk and some light sweetener. Once brewed the aroma suggests hints of vanilla and hazelnut.

On the palate DAVIDsTEA’s Coffee Pu’erh plays nice. Not too astringent, pucker or strong. The flavor comes through well, but doesn’t overshadow the pu’erh itself. I could still taste the gritty earthiness of the brew which was reassuring. Some undertones of chocolate are easy to taste as well.

Upon the second, third and fourth steepings, the undertones turn more heavily toward a mossiness and of darker chocolate than earlier steepings.

Coffee-Puerh Tea from DAVIDsTEA

Pu’erh teas are a love it or hate it breed for many people. This one I find isn’t overly strong in any one area. In fact it’s remarkably well balanced and easy to drink regardless of whether you’re a tea drinker who enjoys pu’erh or you’re a coffee drinker.

Fans of  pu’erh teas as well as chocolate flavored teas, keemun teas and coffee may enjoy this blend.

This spice based chai is a rather delicious one. Although it’s spice based, the flavor is surprisingly smooth on the palate.

The loose tea is very nice to look at. With its red peppercorns, broad leaves, red rooibos and other ingredients and’s a collection of visuals to keep your eyes budy. The aroma hints at cinnamon but has plenty of the cardamom and peppercorns to provide a feisty play in the nose.

The liquor brews up a beautiful orange gold and smooths the aroma providing a savory sweet collection of flavor suggestions including coconut, ginger and peppercorn.

I like this tea best with milk. I’ve always traditionally made chai with milk as that’s how I was taught by Indian friends of mine. This tea is ‘ok’ without milk. But it really comes alive with milk added.

I recommend this chai to fans of other chai blends, especially Pumpkin Spice chai blends. Fans of cinnamon teas will also find this a palate pleaser.

The first thing you’ll notice about Turkish Delight is that it looks as if a round of fireworks exploded in the package. Red peppercorns, large colorful fruit chunks, various nuts, black tea and a collection of spices may sound busy… but I assure you it’s like a kid looking through legos for the piece they want. It’s an adventure!

The aroma from the dry cornucopia is somehow both spicy and sweet. You’ll catch some of the fruits and the pistachios off the bat. The peppercorn spice comes in later. Once the tisane is brewed its scent becomes wholly sweet with just a twinge of spice to draw you in to its milky orange liquor.

Flavor-wise this brew is sweet with a spice bite in the finish. It lingers for just a minute with some fruit sweetness sticking with it. You won’t need any sugar added to this tea if you like it sweet. Simply drink it as is.

Turkish Delight isn’t very bold from a palate perspective. There’s no strong bite. It’s actually one of the sweeter and smoother teas I’ve had in a very long time. Good on-ya David’s Tea! This tea is top rate to me and has earned a five for both the flavor and the aroma, very difficult to get!

Wednesday is Green Tea, White Tea, Rooibos, Oolong and Tisane (Herbal) Review Day!

I’ve become an especially big fan of some interestingly blended teas as of late. David’s Tea based in Toronto, Ontario Canada offers a delicious Gunpowder green they call Gunpowder Taffy… and it’s delicious!

You know right off that bat this tea will be tasty. The beautiful green and brown lightly twisted and curled leaves combine with orange apricot & yellow marigold blossoms for a stunning visual profile rival any tea I’ve reviewed yet. Brewed this tea provides a lightly green tinged light gold liquor.

The aroma is rather notably filled with sweet caramel and lightly pungent apricot, but I couldn’t detect any of the typical gunpowder astringency I had been expecting.

The flavor is smooth with a distinct caramel creaminess. There is also an underlying sweetness provided by the apricot and marigold blossoms. Contrary to the notes from the aroma, the Gunpowder Taffy’s base green tea does come through with a light astringency for a Gunpowder green and with a slightly long tailing finish leaving you wanting more.

In short, if you were to imagine a creamy, sweet and lightly tart tea… this would be it. I can’t help but recommend it for everyone. I have yet to try it iced, but I imagine you won’t get the same smooth flavor profile.
