Storing Tea

Tea easily absorbs moisture and smells and flavors and so it is very important that it be kept in a cool dry place away from any strong smelling items. It must be stored in a dark airtight container and used within a reasonable time to ensure quality of taste. Because light breaks down the quality of tea, glass containers aren’t good for storing tea unless kept away from the light. Packaging is important!

The process of packaging tea is important because tea that is old or not properly packaged loses its flavor and aroma more quickly.

Storage Container Good Storage Bad Storage Reason
Clear Glass   X Allows light to enter and degrade the tea.
Ceramic X   Doesn’t allow light in, can be airtight and doesn’t impact the flavor of the tea.
Wood   X Impacts the flavor of the tea.
Metal X   Doesn’t allow light in, can be airtight and only slightly impacts the flavor of the tea.
